The second outdoor night in December was unusually warm and lacking snow like the first one. I drove south from Lappeenranta, heading to lake Haapajärvi bird hide and lean-to. Birdwatching is not really my cup of tea, but I thought that the bird hide might be a good place to see the northern lights (the aurora borealis forecast was promising). The lights from cities on the Russian side of the border were shining more clearly, but I was able to see a slight green haze on the clouds.

Joulukuun toinen ulkona vietetty yö oli edellisen tapaan poikkeuksellisen lämpimissä ja lumettomissa olosuhteissa. Ajoin autolla Lappeenrannan eteläpuolelle, kohteenani Haapajärven lintutorni ja laavu. En ymmärrä lintujen bongaamisesta tuon taivaallista, mutta lintutorni vaikutti hyvältä paikalta metsästää illalle ennustettuja revontulia. Pilvisen sään vuoksi revontulet eivät tosin erottuneet sen kummemmin kuin Venäjän puolella sijaitsevien kaupunkien valot, mutta pieni vihreä häivähdys taivaalla oli kuitenkin havaittavissa.

Couple years ago a wind park called TuuliMuukko was built near Lappeenranta. Close to one of the wind turbines was Ilottula’s lean-to and luckily it was preserved. A few trails lead to the lean-to, but you can also park your car next to the wind turbine and walk about 100 m (330 feet) to the lean-to. Even though the wind park does bring some industrial feel to the nature, it is an interesting target per se. Not to mention the benefits of renewable energy sources comparing to the fossil fuels.

I spent the night at the lean-to that has room for only one overnight guest (or more, if you put your mattress on the ground). Making fire is forbidden from May to August due the threat of spreading a wild fire – so you shouldn’t plan to grill any sausages during the summer. You can hear the humming from the wind turbine to the lean-to, but the sound is not any louder than a slight wind. I slept few hours and when I woke up 10 m (32 feet) from me a red fox was staring at me. Before I had a chance to find my camera he was already gone.

When I arrived it was dark, so I didn’t notice a car wreck next to the trail. The cab of a old post van is rusting away straight next to the trail that leads to the lean-to. The trail from the wind turbine to the lean-to is a bit uneven, but wide enough to go with a wheelchair. In that sense this lean-to is accessible.

Lappeenrannan itäpuolelle rakennettiin pari vuotta sitten TuuliMuukko-niminen tuulivoimalapuisto. Yhden voimalan juureen jäi Ilottulan laavu, joka on onneksi säilytetty. Paikalle johtaa polkuja, mutta myös autolla pääsee aivan tuulivoimalan viereen, josta matkaa laavulle on noin 100 m. Vaikka tuulivoimala rikkookin hieman paikan luontoa, on se toisaalta kiinnostava kohde itsessään ja uusiutuva energia on aina fossiilista parempi vaihtoehto.

Majoittauduin siis tuulivoimalan juuressa sijaitsevalle laavulle, jossa on tilaa yhdelle yöpyjälle (tai useammalle, jos patjat asettaa maahan). Laavulla on tulentekokielto touko-elokuussa ilmeisesti maastopalovaaran vuoksi – makkaranpaistoretkiä ei siis kesälle kannata suunnitella. Tuulivoimalan humina kuuluu laavulle, mutta ääni ei ole kevyttä tuulta kovempaa. Nukuin muutaman tunnin ja herätessäni minua tuijotti kettu noin kymmenen metrin päästä. Se jolkotteli matkoihinsa ennen kuin ehdin kaivaa kameran esiin.

Olin saapunut hämärällä, joten en ollut tullessani huomannut polun laidassa olevaa autonraatoa. Vanhan postiauton ohjaamo-osa makaa ruostumassa aivan polun vieressä. Tuulivoimalan luota laavulle johtava polku on hieman epätasainen, mutta niin leveä, että sitä voi uskoakseni kulkea myös pyörätuolilla, joten siinä mielessä tämä laavu on esteetön.

Even though I tend to take lots of photos while traveling, I rarely shoot any photos where I live. The places you see every day aren’t just as fascinating. Now I decided to do a nightly photowalk just a couple kilometers from my home. I go running often to Pappilanniemi (that would translate as Vicarage peninsula) track, that serves also as a nature trail. The rocky shore in Pappilanniemi is a peaceful place in nature, but still quite near to the town. On the other hand another interesting photo opportunity is along the way to Pappilanniemi. There is a UPM Kaukas’ wastewater treatment plant or the Shit Bay as the employers casually call it. Pappilanniemi is known as an area that has ticks that carry Lyme disease and TBE (tick-borne encephalitis), so you should always perform a tick-check routine.

This time I wanted to sleep under the open sky first time during the Two Nights -challenge. I laid my air mattress on a nice spot by the water and enjoyed the beautiful view. Only downside is about a million mosquitoes that are biting me constantly. I wish that the slight wind from lake Saimaa will blow them away eventually. The temperature is now 14°C (57°F). Even though the sun is already rising, I think I have time to sleep a few hours. At this time of the year the night lasts less than 5 hours in Southern Finland. And during that time it doesn’t really come dark at all.

Valokuvaan paljon matkustellessani, mutta jostain syystä omaa asuinseutua tulee kuvattua harvoin. Jokapäiväiset paikat eivät herätä samaa kiinnostusta. Nyt päätin kuitenkin tehdä yöllisen valokuvausretken aivan parin kilometrin päähän kotoani. Lenkkeilen usein Pappilanniemen pururadalla, joka on myös luontopolku. Pappilanniemen rantakalliot ovat rauhallinen paikka luonnossa ja kuitenkin lähellä kaupunkia. Toisaalta kiinnostava kuvauskohde on myös paikalle johtavan tien varrella oleva Kaukaan tehtaiden jätevedenpuhdistamo tai Paskalahti, kuten sitä työntekijät kutsuvat. Pappilanniemessä oleva punkkikanta voi tartuttaa borrelioosia sekä puutiaisaivotulehdusta, joten täällä liikuttuaan on hyvä tehdä punkkitarkastus.

Tällä kertaa päätin myös yöpyä ensimmäisen kerran taivasalla Two Nights -haasteen aikana. Levitin ilmapatjani mukavalle paikalle keskelle rantakalliota ja jäin nautiskelemaan eteeni avautuvasta maisemasta. Ainoana haittana ovat noin miljoona hyttystä, jotka yrittävät syödä minua koko ajan. Ehkä rannalle käyvä pieni tuulenvire ajaa ne lopulta pois. Lämmintä on nyt 14°C. Ajattelin ehtiä vielä nukkumaan muutaman tunnin, vaikka aurinko on jo nousemassa. Yö kestää tähän aikaan vuodesta Etelä-Suomessa alle 5 tuntia ja kunnolla pimeää ei tule ollenkaan.
