Fight the frostbite

What have I learned about winter camping by now? I wasn’t freezing this time, though I wasn’t actually warm either. So, what did I do differently?

1. I changed the foam mattress to the air mattress – better insulation and less cold from the ground
2. Better layered clothing – three pairs of socks, base layer, sweat pants, t-shirt, fleece, winter jacket and pants (and naturally gloves and a beanie)
3. Warmer sleeping bag and a liner for it – layered clothing and layered sleeping

I still should change my sleeping bag to an actual winter version. When the comfort temperature is nowhere near subzero, I must sleep with all my clothes on. Below there are few more photos from my last trip.

Mitä on tullut opittua talviretkeilystä tähän mennessä? Kuumuudesta ei tarvinnut vieläkään kärsiä, mutta tällä kertaa en sentään palellut. Joten mitä tein eri tavalla?

1. Vaihdoin solumuovipatjan ilmapatjaan – parempi eristyskyky ja vähemmän kylmää maasta
2. Parempi kerrospukeutuminen – kolmet sukat, aluskerrasto, verkkarit, t-paita, fleece ja toppapuku (sekä tietysti hanskat ja pipo)
3. Lämpimämpi makuupussi ja makuupussin lakana – kerrospukeutumista tämäkin

Makuupussi olisi vielä varaa vaihtaa oikeaan kunnolliseen talviversioon. Comfort-lämpötilojen ollessa plusasteikolla joutuu nukkumaan kaikki vaatteet päällä. Yllä on vielä muutama kuva viimereissulta.

All about that bass

I decided to take another round with the lean-to in Isosaari for my first part of two nights challenge in March. Last time I had to escape the cold before the dawn. Now that I have better gear with me, I’m trying to make it to the dawn. At the coldest time during the night it should be about -6°C (21°F).

When I was crossing the lake Pitkäjärvi with my grandmother’s kicksled, I heard a weird deep sound. First I thought that it was some noise from the houses nearby, but soon I realised that it was coming from somewhere closer. I stopped to listen to the deep growl, which sounded like there was a distant rave party somewhere. After hearing some small cracks I finally realised that the sound was coming from the ice beneath me. Even though it is subzero during the nights, it’s already pretty warm during the days and it’s melting the ice. It seems like I’m going to listen this bass concert whole night.

Maaliskuun ensimmäisellä two nights -keikalla päätin ottaa revanssin Isosaaren laavun kanssa. Edellisellä kerrallahan jouduin pakenemaan kylmää ennen aamunkoittoa. Nyt hieman paremmin varustautuneena yritän kestää aamuun asti. Yöllä lämpötilan pitäisi laskea kylmimmillään -6°C tasolle.

Ylittäessäni Pitkäjärven jäätä isoäitini potkukelkalla kuulin jostain outoa matalaa ääntä. Luulin sen aluksi tulevan rannalla olevista taloista, mutta pian tajusin äänen tulevan jostain lähempää. Pysähdyin välillä kuuntelemaan syvää murinaa, joka kuulosti siltä kuin jossain kaukana olisi rave-bileet. Pienten rasahdusten myötä ymmärsin viimein äänen tulevan jäästä. Vaikka nyt illalla onkin pakkasta, niin päivisin on ollut melko lämmintä ja jää alkaa pikkuhiljaa halkeilla. Tätä bassokonserttia saa nyt ilmeisesti kuunnella yön läpi.

Sausages, hammocks and good company

My dear old friend Dima joined me today to continue the Two Nights -challenge. We drove together to Nilsiä, near Tahko ski resort, and walked along a ski track to a goahti at Hiekkoniemi.

I was surprised by the modern facilities – we have our own privy here. We have been grilling some sausage and tasted some horribly bad curry chicken (pineapple, why on earth?!). In addition we tested if JetBoil was faster than Primus-stove. Both boiled 0,5 l (2 cups) water in 2,5 min. Also my new air mattress seems to insulate nicely. The temperature will stay in -1°C (30°F) through the whole night.

Hyvä ystäväni Dima lähti seurakseni jatkamaan Two Nights -haasteen edistämistä. Ajoimme yhdessä Nilsiään, Tahkon lähelle, ja kävelimme hiihtoladun varrella olevalle Hiekkoniemen kodalle.

Yllätyin moderneista mukavuuksista, koska täällähän on jopa ulkohuussi. Olemme ehtineet jo paistaa makkaraa ja maistaa hirveän pahaa currykanaa (ananasta, miksi ihmeessä?!). Lisäksi vertasimme Primus-keittimen ja JetBoilin nopeutta – molemmat saivat puoli litraa vettä kiehumaan noin 2,5 minuutissa. Uuden retkipatjani lämmöneristysominaisuudet vaikuttavat myös toimivan hyvin. Lämpötila näyttäisi olevan koko yön -1°C.

JetBoil Flash PCS

While hiking, I used to be using the classic from Sweden – alcohol-burning Trangia – to cook my meals. Now I wanted to give a chance to a slightly more effective gas stove, because I rarely need to use my portable stove in very cold temperatures. I got enchanted by the all-in-one idea of JetBoil (and the fancy look to tell the truth), while I was looking through my options. JetBoil claims its device makes the water boil faster than others (0,5 l / 2 cups in 2,5 min), which would naturally reduce the gas consumption. There are few different size JetBoils available – for a single person I thought that Flash PCS (with its 1 l / 32 oz cup and total weight of 400 g / 14 oz without the gas) would be perfect.

JetBoil Flash PCS (Personal Cooking System) comes with a cup and its neoprene sock, the actual stove, a fuel canister stabilizer, a pot support, a lid for the cup and a bottom cover/measuring cup. The stove has a button igniter and a wire loop that adjusts the burner. JetBoil recommends their own gas, but all gas cartridges with the normal screw thread fit the stove. At least in Finland most of the gas seems to be that same propane-isobutane-butane mixture. Small (100 g / 3,5 oz) gas cartridge fits inside the cup with the stove. Even though the volume of the cup is 1 l (32 oz), it has a “max safe fill” line inside that allows 0,5 l (2 cups) of water. I don’t know if it should be taken seriously or not. It might be to avoid the charges from backpackers who’ve burned themselves with boiling water. The bottom cover of the cup serves also as a measuring cup of 250 ml (1 cup). The folding fuel canister stabilizer is not perfectly frustration-free on the first try, but its sticky feet should keep the whole shebang standing pretty nicely. The see-through lid and the neoprene sock for the cup serve as insulation. The neoprene sock has also a heat indicator that might be there for the sake of the novelty. I think the pot supporter is not needed, of one uses the actual cup. This one was also bought from the fine people of Varuste.net and it cost me 109 € as a VIP-customer, normal price is 129 €.

Olen aiemmin retkeillessäni käyttänyt ruuanlaittoon ruotsalaisklassikkoa – spriipolttimella lämpiävää Trangiaa. Halusin kuitenkin kokeilla hieman tehokkaampaa kaasukeitintä, koska minulla ei ole vielä ollut tarvetta kokkailla kovilla pakkasilla. Tarjontaan tutustuessani viheätyin JetBoilin keittimien all-in-one -periaatteeseen (ja rehellisyyden nimissä myös kauniimpaan ulkomuotoon). JetBoil markkinoi laitettaan nopealla keittoajalla (puoli litraa vettä 2,5 min), joka luonnollisesti säästää myös kaasua. JetBoilin keittimiä on saatavalla muutamassa eri koossa – yhden hengen tarpeisiin sopivaksi koin Flash PCS:n, jonka kuppi on tilavuudeltaan 1 l ja koko laitteen paino (ilman kaasua) 400 g.

JetBoil Flash PCS:n (Personal Cooking System) mukana tulee kuppi ja sitä suojaava neopreenisukka, itse keitin, kaasupullon tuki, kattilatuki, kupin kansi ja pohjan suoja/mittakuppi. Keittimessä on sytytyspainike ja kaasun säädin. JetBoil suosittelee omaa kaasuaan, mutta kaikki normaalikierteellä olevat kaasut sopivat keittimeen ja ainakin suomalaisten kauppojen tarjonta vaikuttaisi olevan samaa propaani-isobutaani-butaani -seosta. Pienen (100 g) kaasusäiliön voi pakata keittimen osien kanssa kupin sisälle. Vaikka kupin tilavuus on 1 l, sen sisällä oleva “max safe fill” -raja sallii kuppiin laitettavan puoli litraa vettä. En tiedä onko tällä mitään tekemistä todellisuuden kanssa. Viiva on ehkä tehty estämään kiehuneella vedellä itsensä polttaneiden retkeilijöiden oikeusjutut. Kupin pohjaa suojaava muovikippo toimii myös 250 ml mitta-astiana. Taiteltava kaasupullon tuki ei ole ensikokemalta täysin turhautumista vapaata muotoilua, mutta jalkojen alla olevat tahmeat tassut luultavasti pitävät tuen hyvin paikallaan maassa. Kupin läpinäkyvä suojakansi ja neopreenisukka toimivat eristeenä pitäen veden lämpimänä. Neopreenisukassa on myös lämpöindikaattori, jonka arvo on ehkä lähinnä viihteellinen. Kattilatukea ei ymmärtääkseni tarvitse, jos käyttää astiana vain mukana tulevaa kuppia. Tämänkin hankinnan tein Varuste.netistä, VIP-hintana 109 €, normaalisti 129 €.

Therm-a-Rest NeoAir All Season

After suffering from freezing conditions with my poorly insulating mattress last time, I decided that my next new gear would be a good air mattress. Foam pads are light weight, durable and ready-to-use, but bulky and have poor insulating qualities. Everyone should choose their mattress using their own criteria, but I’d like to share which things were important part of my decision making. I noticed that many outdoor forums suffer from bunch of squabbling know-it-alls and more analytical information can be found from blogs. Being a pint-sized person I freeze easily. That’s why it’s important for me that my mattress has good insulation qualities. Like every hiker, I appreciate things to be light weight, though I’m not ultra lite enthusiast. Air mattress needs to be durable, because a small hole makes it good for nothing. I plan to use my mattress long periods of time, so comfort is not insignificant either.

I was more convinced of the good price/quality ratio of Therm-a-Rest than Exped, after reading some long term reviews of the products made by these two major manufacturers. The most useful mattress comparison chart I found from OutdoorGearLab (includes also full reviews of every mattress) with scores for warmth, comfort, durability, weight and packed size. Top three was Xtherm, Xlite and All Season from Therm-a-Rest NeoAir -collection. Xlite had clearly lower R-value (3,2) that measures insulation quality than All Season (4,9) and Xtherm (5,7). That alone dropped Xlite out even though it was the lightest one. The choice between Xtherm and All Season was dictated by the slightly better comfort and 50 € lower price of All Season. It meant 100 g (3,5 oz) more weight and slightly smaller R-value compared to Xtherm (good review on Hiking in Finland). All Season is available in three sizes: medium (51 x 168 cm / 20 x 66 in) is only 30 g (1 oz) lighter than regular (51 x 183 cm / 20 x 72 in), but regular is 170 g (6 oz) lighter than large (63 x 196 cm / 25 x 77 in). I voted for comfort and bought 540 g (1 lb 2 oz) weighing regular even though medium might have been big enough.

My mattress arrived today and I was able to examine it indoors. Therm-a-Rest NeoAir All Season Regular is really small and is only a wee bit heavier than my old foam pad. It comes with a small pump (that uses two AAA batteries), which inflates the mattress in three minutes. A few puffs after that will make the mattress more solid. It’s a matter of preference if you like to carry the 65 g (2,3 oz) pump. The mattress can be inflated quicker using your own lungs, but the manufacturer doesn’t recommend it in sub zero temperatures. The moisture might damage the internal structures of the mattress when it freezes. Surface material feels quite nice, but mattress keeps rustling like a bag of potato chips when you move. I think the sound is caused by the materials that reflect back the body heat. All Season comes with a repair kit and a thin pack sack, which I found to be way too virgin (or then I didn’t roll the mattress properly). Deflating and rolling the mattress took me about four minutes. I paid 151,20 € as a VIP customer of Varuste.net, the regular price being 168 €. I’ll be able to test the mattress this week and I will surely write how it works outdoors. And time will tell how long it lasts.

Paleltuani viimereissulla huonosti eristävän patjan takia päätin seuraavan varustehankinnan olevan kunnollinen ilmapatja. Solumuovipatjat ovat kevyitä, kestäviä ja heti käyttövalmiita, mutta kookkaita ja huonosti eristäviä verrattuna ilmapatjoihin. Patjavalinta kannattaa tehdä omien kriteeriensä mukaan, mutta kerron mitkä asiat vaikuttivat hankintapäätökseen omalla kohdallani. Huomasin vaellusfoorumeiden kärsivän usein besserwissereiden kinastelusta ja analyyttisempaa tietoa löytyvän helpommin blogeista. Olen pienikokoinen ja palelen melko helposti. Siten minulle oli tärkeää, että patjan lämmöneristyskyky on hyvä. Tämän lisäksi arvostan jokaisen retkeilijän tapaan keveyttä, mutta en ole grammanviilaaja. Ilmapatjan on hyvä olla myös kestävä, koska rikkinäinen patja on yhtä tyhjän kanssa. Tavoitteena on käyttää patjaa pitkiäkin aikoja kerrallaan, joten mukavuustekijätkään eivät ole poissa laskuista.

Luettuani joitain pidemmän aikavälin käyttäjäkokemuksia kahden suuren valmistajan patjoista Therm-a-Rest vaikutti hinta-laatu -suhteeltaan Expediä paremmalta. OutdoorGearLabin sivuilla oli minulle hyödyllisin patjavertailu (myös patjakohtaiset arvostelut), jossa on pisteytetty valintakriteerit (lämpö, mukavuus, kestävyys, paino ja pakkauskoko) erikseen. Kolmen kärjessä ovat Therm-a-Restin NeoAir-sarjan Xtherm, Xlite ja All Season. Lämmöneristyskykyä mittaava R-arvo on Xlitellä selkeästi alhaisempi (3,2) kuin All Seasonilla (4,9) ja Xthermillä (5,7), joten jätin ensinmainitun keveydestään huolimatta pois laskuista. Valinnan Xthermistä All Seasoniin käänsi jälkimmäisen hieman korkeammat mukavuuspisteet ja noin 50 € hintaero. All Seasonin valinta tarkoitti siis hieman huonompaa eristyskykyä ja noin 100 g lisää painoa verrattuna Xthermiin (Xthermistä on hyvä arvostelu Hiking in Finlandin sivuilla). All Season on saatavilla kolmessa koossa, jossa mediumin (51 x 168 cm) ja regularin (51 x 183 cm) painoero on vain 30 g, mutta regularin ja largen (63 x 196 cm) painoero on jo 170 g. Siten valitsin 540 g painavan regularin mukavuusperustein, vaikka mediumkin olisi ehkä riittänyt.

Patja saapui tänään ja pääsin tutkimaan sitä nyt sisätiloissa. Therm-a-Rest NeoAir All Season Regular menee todellakin pieneen tilaan ja painaa vain hieman enemmän kuin vanha solumuovipatjani. Mukana tulee pieni patterikäyttöinen (kaksi AAA-paristoa) pumppu, joka kolmessa minuutissa täyttää patjan melko täyteen. Sen jälkeen patjan saa napakaksi parilla puhalluksella. Noin 65 g painavan pumpun tarpeellisuus on mieltymyskysymys. Patja täyttyy varmasti nopeammin puhaltamalla, mutta pakkasella valmistaja ei sitä suosittele hengitysilman kosteuden voidessa jäätyä patjan sisällä. Pinta on hyvin miellyttävän tuntuinen ihoa vasten, mutta patjan sisältö rapisee kuin sipsipussi asentoa vaihtaessa. Äänen aiheuttaa ilmeisesti patjan sisällä olevat kehonlämpöä takaisin heijastavat materiaalit. Mukana tulee myös paikkaussetti sekä ohut suojapussi patjalle, joka oli kokonsa puolesta turhan neitseellinen tai sitten olin rullannut patjan huonosti. Tyhjentämiseen ja rullaamiseen minulta meni noin neljä minuuttia. Hintaa ostokselle tuli 151,20 € Varuste.netin VIP-asiakkaana, tavallinen hinta on 168 €. Testaukseen ilmapatja pääsee tällä viikolla ja kirjoitan varmasti jatkossa miltä se vaikuttaa käytössä ja aika näyttää kuinka pitkään patja kestää.
